Career
Siyabonga Thwala embarked on his acting career in 1989. He made his screen debut in the 1996 made-for-TV movie “Born Free: A New Adventure.” That same year, he made a cameo appearance in an episode of the television series “Tarzan: The Epic Adventures” titled “Tarzan and the Scarlet Diamond” (Season 1, Episode 5).
Thwala’s career gained momentum when he landed a role in the TV sitcom “Streaks,” based on a Cape Town hair salon, where he acted alongside now-veteran actor Themba Ndaba. In 2003, he secured the recurring role of Jimmy on “Gazlam.”
The actor rose to prominence with his portrayal of Vusi Zwane in the e.tv soap opera “Scandal!,” a role for which he received a Golden Horn Award for Best Actor in a TV Soap.
In 2007, Thwala joined the cast of SABC 1’s “Generations” as Paul Mashaba, the younger brother of ruthless businessman Kenneth Mashaba played by Seputla Sebogodi. He left the show in 2010.
One of the most significant roles of Thwala’s career came in 2013 when he was cast as taxi boss Mpiyakhe Zungu in Mzansi Magic’s highly acclaimed series “Isibaya.” The character of Mpiyakhe Zungu became immensely popular, and Thwala’s portrayal earned him the South African Film and Television Award for Best Actor in a TV Drama in 2014.
Thwala’s talent and versatility led him to prominent roles in other TV shows, such as “Muvhango” and “Rhythm City.” He also appeared in the HIV/AIDS drama series “Intersexions,” winning him his second South African Film and Television Award in 2014 for Best Actor in a TV Drama.
Outside of acting, Siyabonga Thwala created and hosted the documentary series “Yobe,” which aimed to bring together victims and perpetrators to foster understanding and forgiveness. In 2019, he starred as corrupt former President Hendrik in the award-winning political drama-thriller “The Republic,” alongside Florence Masebe and Hlomla Dandala.
From Accolades to New Horizons
Thwala has made notable appearances in several high-profile television shows in South Africa, earning multiple awards for his outstanding performances. In 2023, he joined the cast of the telenovela “The River” in its sixth season, playing the role of Bangizwe Zwane. He made his onscreen debut on February 10, 2023.
In 2024, Siyabonga Thwala secured a role in the new action-drama series “Empini‘,” portraying the character of Khaya Bhodoza, a prominent businessman and political stalwart.
In addition to his television work, Thwala has also showcased his talent in theatre productions such as “Burning Blue,” Janice Honeyman’s “Turkish Delight,” “Aladdin,” and “Blues Brothers,” which earned him a Vita Award.
